What to Look For

How do I choose an assisted living community?

Start with communities that fit your parent’s care needs, location, and budget, then tour a few.

If possible, bring your parent and visit at mealtime.

Start with the basics.

Tour more than one.

Visiting a few communities makes it easier to compare the atmosphere, staff, and overall experience.

Watch how people interact.

Watch how staff interact with residents, ask how long employees have worked there, and notice whether residents seem engaged.

Make sure pricing is clear.

Ask what the starting rate includes and how costs may change as care needs change.
