Honoring Veterans and Helping Families Navigate Benefits
Heritage is proud to honor resident veterans and help families understand benefits and resources that may be available. That includes helping veterans and surviving spouses know what questions to ask so they do not miss support they may have earned.
Heritage’s current Veterans designation reflects that commitment.
Understanding VA Aid & Attendance
Can VA benefits pay for assisted living?
For those who qualify, VA Aid and Attendance may help with assisted living costs. It is an addition to the VA pension for eligible veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities. The benefit is paid to the individual and may be used toward assisted living.
Eligibility generally depends on factors such as wartime-period service, discharge status, income, assets, and medical need. We do not determine eligibility, and no community can promise qualification. The VA makes that decision.
General Eligibility
Who may qualify?
Veterans
who served during a designated wartime period and meet the VA’s service, financial, and medical criteria
Surviving spouses
of qualifying veterans, who may be eligible for a benefit in their own right
Because eligibility rules and benefit amounts are set by the VA and change over time, we do not publish dollar figures here. Current amounts are available at VA.gov or from the resources below.

Gather records.
The veteran’s discharge paperwork (DD214), marriage and any divorce records, a death certificate if the applicant is a surviving spouse, and current income and asset information. This can take time, so it is worth starting early.
Beyond the Paperwork
More Than a Benefits Conversation
This page is about more than paperwork. It is about honoring resident veterans, making room for their stories, and helping families understand their options. Heritage does not determine eligibility, but we can help families know where to start so an earned benefit is not overlooked.
Ask about VA benefits when you visit.
